kton — how a question became a protocol

The fault line

Only two kinds of statement are provable from themselves: logic and mathematics. Everything we say about the world is observed, measured, attested — never proven; it stands or falls with whoever vouches for it. plankton is the first half: re-derivable, checkable against itself. nekton is the second — not the weaker half, but the human one: the person who stands behind a claim. Between them we live, necessarily, in an as if: we act as if our statements held, because we can never prove them — we can only vouch, and trust one another. That is the habitable ground between falling for a thing and refusing it. Together, the two halves are kton.

The road there

The road ran through the work, not through a plan.

At plankton Labs, from 2005, I built technology that was meant to show what went on inside it — the system as narration, not black box. Two pieces from those years already carried what would later split into kton and Asifin. The Digital Confession Booth (2005) replaced the priest's discretion with mathematically provable secrecy — trust replaced by verifiable cryptography, seven years before I met the pharmaceutical world. Conspirative Whispers (2008) was its exact inversion: a system that judged you and hid the grounds for its judgment — the opaque algorithmic authority that plankton is built against, staged as art sixteen years early.

Later, working on semantic technologies, I learned how meaning can be structured and computed — and where the Semantic Web hit its wall. It wanted to be a true description of the world; it treated knowledge as a fixed inventory; it left out the computations its statements rested on. kton turns each of those around: attested statements with an origin instead of a world-model; knowledge as something re-executable; the calculation carried with the claim. The sharp form of the difference: for now we act as if this was true based on that.

At scinteco, as improve / the improVerse, the idea found its first concrete use case — make every scientific plot a gate to its own data lineage. It was the necessary attempt that could not succeed: the name and the frame located it too much — in scinteco, in improve, in me. It had to emancipate itself, and as the improVerse it couldn't. That failure is what let kton go.

kton is that letting-go: a grammar — plankton and nekton — that sheds its name and its origin in order to be free, the point where there is nothing left to take away.

The seam

Up to here it was my road. From here it no longer belongs to me alone.

I am giving part of the control away — on purpose, not as a loss. kton is becoming a Foundation; it should outgrow the person it ran through. I was the thread the insights passed along, not their owner.
