plankton Labs

Founder & Leader

Since 2005

plankton Labs was Michael's early art and technology research group, focusing on media art, performance, and digital expression. It laid the conceptual groundwork for his later work, establishing the experimental and interdisciplinary approach that characterizes all his projects.

Dutyfreezone of Thought Exchange

Deutsch

English

Since its founding in autumn 2002, Plankton sees itself as a free space for diverse media art experiments without regard to added value and profit maximization, as a duty-free zone of thought exchange and design factory for audiovisual time machines, whose explicitly prosthetic character generates new places of real-time only in performative use and substructures them into electro-aesthetic rhythms.

Through free access, the publication of used codes and programs, and with no specifically defined goal to be achieved, the only goal of Plankton that can be fixed is the emergence of new networks and information channels.

Established 2001: Open Source Pioneers

Starting with development of open source software for live visuals that evolved into live cutting tools for TV and video streams-preceding the current streaming boom by years. More and more it evolved into a space for arts and installations, accompanied by theoretical symposia.

Our work has been seen at European Cultural Capital Sibiu, Forum Alpbach, Poolbar Festival, and galleries throughout Europe. We pushed boundaries before boundaries existed, creating tools that became standard practice a decade later.

The Collective

Plankton is a heterogeneous group of enthusiasts from diverse educational backgrounds and work fields. Founded in 2002 in Innsbruck by Michael Hackl and Bernard Zösmayer, registered as an association since 2005, and led by Barbara Connert and Michael Hackl since 2006.

With headquarters at Schloss Büchsenhausen in Innsbruck and outposts in Vienna, Linz, and Holland, we operate as a distributed network-much like the plankton we're named after.

Critical Irony & Open Source

Our content work consists of critical-ironic questioning of today's media reality. Expression follows concept and extends from sculpture through media work to text. Our second field dedicates itself to research and free experimentation in media design, with special focus on work with open source software and possibilities for collaboration in live performance.

The work happens in a closed circuit between software design and performance-each feeding the other in an endless loop of creation and critique.
